I had thought at first, when she closed her eyes, that she had done so merely in order to listen better, but this was apparently not the case. But less than one star for the appalling racism played for laughs consistently in the book, beginning to end.

In these novels, bland heroes play only a tertiary role. Wodehouse really knows how to write a likeable everyman, even if that everyman might be a little slow on the uptake at times. Wodehouss starts to panic and joins the temperance movement —the Temple of the New Dawn, to be precise — eventually becoming engaged to one of its promoters, Mabel Prescott. Once in Hollywood, he completely forgets to look for Eggy until, one night, he bumps into him at a party that April June is giving.

In these troubled times, humour is an effective anti-dote to the kind of blues we face. In this case, a typical Wodehouse bumbling English lord changes places with an obnoxious child actor from Hollywood.

Then disaster strikes in the form of a toothache.
