Although it is such a short read, there was so much descriptive language within the dialogue and narrative from Toundi, that you end up knowing so much in just a few pages. More than anything else, this book is just well written. Moreau has left, Toundi escapes the hospital and heads to Spanish Guinea, where he was first introduced in the beginning of the novel.

Throughout the novel, the white settlers appear unhappy, displeased at their lot in the sad land of the heathens and uncomfortable in the heat of the African sun. What overall theme did I miss? I finally appreciate this novel as an underrated classic of the African Writer’s Series. This book was originally published inwhen Cameroon was still a French colony, and no doubt caused a stir at the time and has historical value for that reason. In the end our narrator finds himself in an awkward situation though in no way culpable: Christianity and sexuality act as the most important agents of European colonial society in his short but powerful novel.
