Founded by Karl Baedeker inthe company relocated in to Leipzig under his third son Fritz Baedeker, who took over control of the company following the death and disablement of his older brothers.
With the widespread advent of mechanical transportation, it was Fritz who managed an explosive growth in the line of travel guides, also producing international guides.
The Baedeker company’s premises and files perished in a December air raid, but Baedeker’s great grandson revived it, restarting, inpublication of tourist guides Scarce pp First Edition Size: Soft Cover, Large 8vo. Translated by Ros Schwartz. The author housa been a prisoner for most of her life. Born inthe eldest daughter of the King of Morocco’s closest aide, she was adopted by the king to be a companion to his little daughter.
Mailika grew up at the royal court of Rabat, locked away in a golden cage, among the royal wives and concubines. But inher father was arrested and executed after an attempt to assassinate the king. Nineteen-year-old Malike, her mother and her five houdx brothers and sisters were thrown into an isolated desert goal. Innocent of any crime, they were locked away in increasingly barbaric conditions for fifteen endless years.
Like a moder Scheherazade, Malika kept up their spirits by telling them stories every night. Finally, the Oufkir children managed to dig a tunnel with their bare hands and made a daring escape. Recaptured after five days, the enusing public hue and cry resulted in house arrest rather than a return to prison. But it was only in that Mailika was finally permitted to leave Morocco to being a new life in France.
