Thirteen years ago I unboxed my new Apple Macintosh, plugged it into the phone line, and discovered the existence of another world. Often Gershenfeld seemed to be rambling from one point to another without a logical transition. His research studies are predominantly focused in interdisciplinary studies involving physics and computer sciencein such fields as quantum computingnanotechnologyand personal fabrication.
And, the technology has only grown since this book came out. Thanks for telling us about the problem. In some ways, I enjoyed this book, not simply as a nearly always interesting exploration of technology – whatever issues I have with Gershenfeld’s interpretations – but also because it was so different from both the mainstream “pop” accounts of the rise of digital fabrication but also from the less engaging work coming out of social studies of science on the same phenomenon.
