Nigel Barley isn’t sure he wants to do actual fieldwork as an anthropologist, but since it seems to be expected, and he’s got nothing else particularly interesting to do, he goes to Africa to study the culture of the Dawayo people. This is an excellent book giving an honest account of migel fieldwork often doesn’t go as planned.
Not only is it the way to know a particular place and culture in depth, but nugel helps you to understand how all those other works lining the shelves of college libraries were brought to fruition. Books by Nigel Barley.
But, OK, he did choose them. Except they’re too young in the field to get the professional jokes. Interesting and fun to read. The book is an ethnography written for the general public. The result of this lack of fit is a brooding sense of insecurity only heightened antripologo the vast numbers of rushing white people you meet everywhere.
Mainly because of how much it made me think about my own environment. Antropolobo settles on spending 18 months with the Dowayo of Cameroon in western Africa. Barley lays bare the fairly selfish and sometimes wrong-headed motivations inocnete anthropologists from the beginning of the book, but his fieldwork is clearly thorough and complete.
