It’s a lucid, engaging and clear book that in spite of being short, explains in a precise and detailed way the whole process of conformation and establishment of an armed insurgency and everything related to its natural reaction; the counterinsurgency.

Upon reading this, I realized that I have read this book before – in fact, probably wxrfare before. Galula’s observations and experiences of insurgencies in Algeria, Indochina, Greece, and China many decades ago have been translated into a clear, concise, quick to read guide about counterinsurgency that can be applied to conflicts today. This requires political programs aimed at placating davd insurgent’s base.

The book is problematic for several reasons. Galula’s theories, developed as an observer of the Chinese Revolution ofand as a participant in France’s counterinsurgency in Algeria,formed the basis for US counterinsurgency efforts in Vietnam. Galula examines larger strategic issues, and describes both military and political actions that are necessary for a successful counterinsurgency campaign.
