Coupled with that is the fact that there are just so many characters and things going on and it’s hard to follow or to really emotionally connect with any of the characters. Besides that, farms get trampled and homes have to be torn down to create the right atmosphere to make the entire set-up believable. Oct 12, Catherine rated it it was ok. I don’t know if I’ve ever read an author who so effectively juggled that many elements in a story and yet still brought everything together in a satisfying conclusion.

Jul 23, Meck M rated it really liked it Shelves: They meet Wizard Derk, who has taken his son Blade to see the Oracles, who say that he will be coached by Deucalion. The only indication of his being less than “perfect” is that his feet blister after weeks of marching. The crazy crusty magical old bat olrd Mara into leaving her husband, tries to kidnap Callette, and mercilessly dooms Derk to fail in every way.

Derk backed away from the roar with his hands over his ears, surrounded in wet brown smoke. Basically, the idea is given in the synopsis.

To conclude, this book had so many great ideas and concepts to offer and its a shame that I didnt care much og most of the execution. It just wasnt my cup of tea.


He does this by forcing everyone to play along in a world-wide game to take people from his world to a new world and experience a fantasy adventure. Chesney’s world’s technology; Don goldwho is a rather forgotten griffin who doesn’t really do much special; Dwrk goldwho is a great cook her food is called “godlike snacks” by the rest of the family” and long-distance flier who plants the Dark Lord’s “clues” that derkholj to his lair; and Elda also goldthe youngest, with the most cat cells, and who is discovered to be a magic-user as well.

I also never saw Barnabas’ betrayal coming. The characters in this book were amazing. In the same year she married John Burrow, a scholar of medieval literature, with dedkholm she had three sons, Richard, Michael and Colin.

It is this subversion of fantasy that leads to plenty of humour and also plenty of clever moments within the book, and the major reason why I can recommend this novel as a fantasy book to investigate.

In a meeting about the Pilgrim Parties, High Chancellor Querida takes a wizard, a high priest and a thief to see the Oracles, who determine that the next person serkholm group sees will play the role of the Dark Lord, and the second person will be the Wizard Guide that they need.

The inhabitants of a magical world fight the evil forces of tourism. Like I said, this isnt entirely negative, since it helps with worldbuilding and developing the characters and their relationships, but these topics just don’t speak to me, so even though it was written very well, I found myself waiting for the actual tours to start, only somewhat enjoying the story.

However, this book skims the surface of most of the moral and psychological issues the narrative runs into; I dearly hope that rape and Shona’s reaction to it were meant as a parody of something, because otherwise the handling of it was shameful. I liked his character and looked forward to getting to know him.

Sep 20, Miss Clark rated it it was ok Shelves: There were quite a few moments of awesome, but on the other hand, there almsot felt like there was too much going on, and the dzrk thrust of the story got lost. I will never again be able to say, “when pigs fly” without cracking up. What’s worse is that I wasn’t satisfied once I did have it, thanks to the anti- climactic drawing room scene where the characters finally expose all the secrets they’d kept from me over the course of the book.

But it’s also a serious novel about Derk, his wife Mara and their two human and five griffin children working together to deal with adversity; it isn’t just oord romp and is really quite dark in a couple of places. I love constructed families in my fiction, but I can also really get behind a loving biological family, too.

Fantasy novelparody. The jumping not-quite-omniscient derkbolm of view, while sometimes frustrating to me, shows this pretty well. Just over six years ago I met the person I want to spend my entire life with, in that time I was very quickly made aware of her affection towards the fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones and regularly told to give her a try. She’s very fast, very bossy, and very self-conscious of her looks. At that point it is not at all a parody. Thus his children are left in charge of everything.

I mentioned that this novel plays on the archetypes of fantasy cleverly. Who should read it?
