I learnt that the Aztec society was largely democratic, had no inherited nobility, and a lot of social mobility. Even in the darkest symbolism of their blood-drenched worship they appear as people with whom we can sympathise.
Very interested to compare this to Warwick Bray’s Everyday Life of the Aztecs, which is wonderful but utterly lacking in citations. My only regret is that it didn’t say more about the roles of women in their society.
I have to say I learned so much, and found it fascinating. This can make reading the book a bit tiresome for some readers.
