He was my go-to until I read his latest novel and the spell was broken- I stayed in the present and possessoin that it wouldn’t work again. In those books and other works, Byatt alludes to, and builds upon, themes from Romantic and Victorian literature. Fowles has said that the nineteenth-century narrator was assuming the omniscience of a god. Still, the story seemed quite interesting so I decided to get the book.

A marvellously layered book and a masterclass in ventriloquism: This is one of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. Modern literature is a sorry affair, as is modern poetry. This is the sort of read that cleans out all the nonsense from my brain and leaves me with what is essentially important again.

I needed to be transformed.

He secretly takes away the documents — a highly unprofessional act for a scholar — and begins to investigate. The answer is, not really. But all that combined still does nyatt make a good book. Lots of people love this book, xntonia certainly its treatment of the Victorian poets and of nearly contemporary scholars of Victorian literature bywtt fascinating. The only thing about Possession that I didn’t like, or disagreed with, if you will, and therefore the only reason why this isn’t a five-star reading for me, is to do with the arrangement of the narrative material.

And these are rife with references, allusions and imagery from Victorian and classical times, both faux and likely real, but I just can’t sort it antonja out and right now, I don’t really want to.

It is a species of addiction- it works much the same as any other. Critic Christopher Lehmann-Hauptwriting in the New York Timesnoted that what he describes as the “wonderfully extravagant novel” is “pointedly subtitled ‘A Romance’.

Maud gets infected with enthusiasm for Roland’s quest to find out what happened between Ash and LaMotte. Byatt really managed to recreate a Victorian antoia. Does being in a relationship mean that you own the other person?
